At the Saalhof, the Old City met the river Main.
The Rententurm (Customs Tower) and the Saalhof stand on the foundation walls of the Kaiserpfalz built by the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa (1150).  Here, duties were collected at Frankfurt's chief ship landing, the Mainkai.  The tower dates from 1455-1456, and was built by Eberhard Friedberger.

The Customs Tower became the toll collection point at Frankfurts most important ship landing in 1489.  It also guarded the most important gate of the city's defenses on the Main, the "Fahrtor."  which closed the Roemerberg off from the river.

Am Saalhof trifft die Altstadt auf den Main. Der Rententurm und der Saalhof stehen auf den Grundmauern der von Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa erbauten Kaiserpfalz (1150).  Der Rententurm war eine Zollstätte am wichtigsten Frankfurter Schiffslandeplatz, dem Mainkai. Er wurde 1455/1456 von Eberhard Friedberger erbaut.

1489 wurde das Rentamt in den Turm verlegt. Der Turm diente auch der Bewachung des "Fahrtores", das den Römerberg zum Main hin abschloss.
