Saalgasse with the Holy Spirit Fountain. The name of the Lane derives from the Saalhof.  On the South side of the little square was the Holy Spirit Hospital and church (razed 1840).  The gabled house on the right "Of the Holy Ghost" was built in 1752.  The house on the left was known as the "Three Fishes" (and before that as the Scharnhaus) was built in the 16th Century and remodeled in the 18th. In 1771-72 this house belonged to a butcher for whom young Goethe won his first trial in his short career as a lawyer.   On the ground floor was a passageway to the Bendergasse, formerly known as the "Herringshock," once the location of Herring merchants.  The adjacent little corner house stood on the site of the former "Brodhalle," the official municipal bread market during medieval times.

Saalgasse mit Heiliggeist-Brunnen. Der Name der Gasse ist hergeleitet vom Saalhof. An der Südseite des kleinen Platzes lag das 1840 abgebrochene Hl. Geistspital mit Kirche. Das Giebelhaus rechts "Zum Hl. Geist" wurde 1752 erbaut. Das Haus links hieß "Drei Fische" und davor "Scharnhaus", erbaut im 16. Jh., umgebaut im 18. Jh.. 1771/72 gehörte es einem Metzger, für den Goethe seinen ersten Prozess gewann. Im Erdgeschoss war ein  Durchgang zur Bendergasse, ehemals Häringshock genannt, Standort der Heringsverkäufer. An der Stelle des gegenüberliegenden kleinen Eckhauses lag  die "Brodhalle", die öffentliche, städtische Brotverkaufsstelle im Mittelalter.
