Remains of the earliest city walls (Carolingian) seen during the construction of the Braubachstrasse in 1905. These walls basically followed the course of the Battonstrasse and Braubachstrasse, and later (with the first expansion of the city) along the Wedelgasse, Bethmannstrasse, and somewhat north of the Weissfrauenstrasse, ending at the Neue Mainzer Strasse. This picture shows a small section of these walls which were excavated north of the Cathedral near the intersection of the Kruggasse. In the Middle Ages, this area of walls and moats ("Braubach") was completely built over. Rest der ältesten Stadtmauer am Durchbruch der Braubachstrasse.
