The Saalhof (sala regia) was a palace of German Emperor's since before the 9th Century until well into the 14th.  After that, the complex came to the hands of a Frankfurt patrician Jakob Knoblauch, a friend of Ludwig the Bavarian. It remained in the possession of his family and their descendents, who used it as a hostelry for Dutch merchants attending the imperial fairs, until 1697, when it was sold to the Bernus Family. The Bernus erected the familiar large addition (Bernusbau) that faces the banks of the Main today.  Enlargement

The chapel is the only remnant of the royal palace of before 1200 that survives intact, and remains to this day the oldest room in Frankfurt, having remarkably survived the bombings of the 2nd World War while most of the Saalhof was severely damaged.  Nothing recognizable of the earlier palace remains.

The simple Romanesque chapel was probably built late in the 1100s during the reign of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, although there are unsubstantiated theories for an even earlier date.

Der Saalhof (sala regia) war vom 9. bis ins 14. Jh. in königlichem Besitz. Danach wurde an den Frankfurter Patrizier Jakob Knoblauch, einem Freund Ludwigs des Bayern, verpfändet. Im Besitz dieser Familie und ihrer Erben wurde er hauptsächlich als Unterkunft für die niederländischen Messegäste benutzt. 1697 wurde er an die Familie Bernus verkauft, die den großen Bau (Bernusbau) an der Mainfront errichten ließ.

Die Saalhofkapelle ist der einzige verbliebene und intakte Rest des königlichen Gebäudes und wurde vermutlich vor 1200 erbaut. Sie ist damit der älteste Raum in Frankfurt, der erstaunlicherweise die Bombardierungen des 2. Weltkrieges überdauert hat, während der Rest des Saalhofes schwer zerstört wurde. Vom früheren Königspalast ist nichts wesentliches übrig geblieben.
