Some of the most picturesque streets and squares of the Altstadt were just to the east of the Cathedral. The pretty Kanngiessergasse and Garkuechenplatz were totally obliterated. The Fahrgasse was the main North-South thoroughfare through the city for 1000 years, part of the old Imperial Highway, and fared little better.
