St. Leonard's is Frankfurt's oldest parish church.  It was started in 1219 as a flat-ceiling basilica with slender east towers over side apses.  These little towers give the church its unique look even to this day.  The architect of the church was possibly the sculptor Engelberg, who carved his name into the east portal.  The little romanesque portals are among the most important features of the building.  They were progressive in their ornamentation but a little behind the times in the figural work.  The ornamentation is related to that of the concurrent French early gothic.  The same types of decoration can be found on the Frankfurt cathedral, as well as the Western building of the Mainz cathedral and St. Peter's Church in Gelnhausen.

Die erste Pfarrkirche der Stadt war die Leonardskirche.  Sie wurde seit 1219 erbaut als flach gedeckte Basilika mit zwei schlanken Osttürmen über den Nebenapsiden.  Die Türme geben heute noch dem Außenbau die besondere Note.  Baumeister war wahrscheinlich der Steinmetz Engelberg, der seinen Namen am östlichen Portal im Innern angebracht hat.  Diese kleine romanische Portale sind sehr beachtenswerte Leistungen.  Sie sind fortschrittlich in der Ornamentik, aber rückständig im Figürlichen.  Die Ornamentik ist von der gleichzeitigen französischen Frühgotik abhängig.  Auch am Dom, am Westbau des Mainzer Domes von 1219, und bei St. Peter in Gelnhausen (um 1220) kommen die gleichen Formen vor.
