This section will show you, by location, the aftermath of the Allied air raids of 1944 on the old city of Frankfurt.  As the illustration of the Krautmarkt above shows, the destruction  was thorough and nearly complete.  As with Dresden, it was decided that it was necessary to obliterate such world historic and artistic treasures as the formerly nearly perfectly preserved medieval core of this ancient Imperial City in order to demoralize the population.  Meanwhile the heavy industry just a few miles to the west, the largest German industrial area outside of the Ruhr, escaped almost unscathed.  You figure!

Dieser Abschnitt zeigt Ihnen die Auswirkungen der Alliierten Luftangriffe von 1944 auf die historische Altstadt von Frankfurt. Wie das obige Bild vom Krautmarkt zeigt, war die Zerstörung fast vollständig. Ebenso wie bei Dresden, hatte man sich entschieden, solche früheren  welthistorischen und künstlerischen Schätze des nahezu vollständig erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Stadtkerns der alten Kaiserstadt auszulöschen, um die Bevölkerung zu demoralisieren. Unterdessen blieb die nur wenige Kilometer westlich angesiedelte  Schwerindustrie, das größte Industriegebiet außerhalb des Ruhrgebietes, nahezu unversehrt. Das müssen sie sich einmal vorstellen.
